Pictou County has experienced a 3.7% decrease in the population since 1996. A large portion of the decrease is due to out migration from the youth sector which comprises a large portion of the population. The decrease is also the result of two province wide trends; an aging population and low birth rates.

Diversity
The vast majority of Pictou County’s residents are non-immigrants. In 2001, 96.9% of the population was born in Canada. Of this 96.9%, 84.3% were born in Nova Scotia. The bulk of immigrants moved to the province before 1991. The Nova Scotia Department of Finance reported that, within 1991-2001, Nova Scotia welcomed 110 new immigrants.
